“EVERYONE IN HIS PLACE, EVERYONE IN HIS ROLE”
Rosarium, exhibition-collection
The concept of the Rosarium was developed by the academician Alexandru Ciubotaru, in collaboration with the landscape architect Alexandru Ouş, in the early 80s of the twentieth century.
The Rosarium is located on an area of about 3 hectares on the southeastern slope of the Botanical Garden. Such researchers as dr. B. Morozovschi, dr. V. Donea, dr. Ludmila Krupkina and P. Luca participated in the creation of the collection for several decades. Currently, the curator of the Rosarium is the researcher Daniela Ivasişin, who has recently initiated the restoration of the collection of roses.
Currently, the exhibition includes about 100 cultivars of roses and 20 species and cultivars of ornamental woody plants. The diversity of roses includes the groups: Thea Hybrid, Grandiflora, Floribunda, Miniatura, Poliantha, Polzanthai. According to the architectural scheme, the following cultivars and species grow in the exhibition: Juniperus communis, Ju. sabina, Picea pungens, Taxus baccata, Thuja occidentalis, Betula pendula, Buxus sempervirens ‘Globosa’, Cerasus tomentosa, Quercus robur ‘Fastigiata’, Syringa vulgaris etc.
The Rosarium exhibition is designed in a free style, but with some classic elements, featuring hidden symmetrical lines, and, if seen from above, the shape of the collection resembles a butterfly.
According to the General Reconstruction Plan, in the center of the exhibition, there shall be a decorative and functional construction – a fountain with technical and public utility installations, surrounded by pergolas with ornamental and utilitarian elements, so that visitors have the opportunity to rest in a pleasant and comfortable environment. The 5 m wide central alley branches radially into 16 sectors, separated by a network of 3 m wide alleys, covered with pebbles of granite stone. The main alleys are stable enough for agricultural machines to move on them.
Along the perimeter of the Rosarium, there will be multiple rows of horse-chestnut and sycamore trees, designed in an asymmetrical pattern, as well as solitary specimens of various trees and shrubs (oak, linden, maple, birch, bloody dogwood, flowering dogwood etc.).
According to the architectural scheme, specimens of coniferous and deciduous plants will be planted thoughout the territory of the exhibition, and in terms of the shape of the crown, most of them will be pyramidal and globular.
The taxonomic composition of the collection is determined by the soil and climatic conditions and the preliminary results of the study on various aspects of the introduction of the genus Rosa in the Republic of Moldova. Due to the favorable natural conditions for growing roses and the presence of numerous species and varieties, a special decorative effect can be achieved and a rich collection can be created to show the unique beauty of these plants.
The species and cultivars of roses are distributed according to a systematic principle in groups, single on the lawn or on the background of decorative trees and shrubs, flowering one after another throughout the growing season.
The climbing roses will be trained on wooden pergolas and on other special supports in all sectors of the exhibition.
To enrich the diversity of the collection, about 650 taxa of roses are going to be planted in the Rosarium.
The following members of the project team have contributed to the renovation of the Rosarium exhibition-collection: Dr. V. Bucaţel as project coordinator, A. Pânzaru – landscape architect, Daniela Ivasişin – researcher.
Being created in the last century, the exhibition of roses is suffering a decline and is facing serious difficulties nowadays because, over time, the plants have lost much of their vitality and the general aspect of the collection has lost some of its aesthetic value. The climatic conditions and, in particular, the natural disasters of previous years, as well as some economic difficulties have led directly to the deterioration of the state of the Rosarium.
Most plants in the Rosarium are old, and a radical renewal of the gene pool, in particular, and of the design of the exhibition, as a whole, is currently needed. To implement this project we would like to kindly ask for support for the procurement of planting material and hard landscape materials.
We would like to invite you to become part of the Rose Garden Project by joining us as volunteers or by making a donation for the reconstruction of the Rosarium.
The Rose Garden needs you!
The cost estimate of the reconstruction of the Rosarium exhibition-collection is 3290.55 thousand lei.
