Project within the framework of Bilateral cooperation programme between the Academy of Sciences of Moldova and the National Authority for Scientific Research of Romania.

Partner institutions in project implementation:
„Stejarul” Biological Research Center, Piatra Neamţ, Romania
Botanical Garden (Institute) of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova.

The overall objective of the project is focused on issues concerning conservation and sustainable exploitation of some species of Lamiaceae, less used in Romania and Moldova, of genera Nepeta, Agastache, Perilla and Lamium, with anti-inflammatory potential through antioxidant action of classes of biologically active compounds (polyphenolic compounds).

Specific objectives:
• aspects of the taxonomic study, distribution, inventory and description of natural habitats of growth, analysis of natural habitats in studied areas and identification of risks, potential threats;
• biomorphological characterization of species of the genera Nepeta, Agastache, Perilla and Lamium from collections and agrosystems that are subject of cultures;
• qualitative and quantitative phytochemical analysis of plant material collected from species of natural populations and crops in field, determining optimal parameters of quality of plant material for extraction and analysis methods;
• correlation between antioxidant capacity, total content (for classes of active ingredients) fractions for highlighting the potential health benefit of these species;
• highlighting the impact of environmental factors and biotic relations on bioproductivity, biologically active products, morpho-phytochemical variability of analyzed species; evaluation of bioproductive indices;
• development of protocols and/or cultivation technologies;
• alternative sustainable use as part of conservation strategies appropriate to the studied species

The implementation period of the project: 2013-2014
